An upcoming comic series from Legendary, titled Acursian, will delve into the lore of Celtic culture and starring in the thick of things will be John Barrowman, the Scottish-American performer known for his roles of Captain Jack Harkness (Doctor Who and Torchwood) and Malcolm Merlyn (Arrow).

Created by Barrowman, his sister Carole, and Erika Lewis (Game of Shadows and Firebrand: The Initiation of Natali Presano), the comic's name is an Old English word that can mean evil and cursed or one who is destined for destruction and misery.

Barrowman's comic book counterpart is Charlie Stewart, whose perfect life begins to fall apart after an ancient Celtic curse begins to take effect. As he looks into his past, Charlie discovers that one of his ancestors, Bonnie Prince Charlie, struck a deal with the Celtic god of war, Bregon. In exchange for allowing Bonnie to win a decisive battle, Bregon asks him to steal three magical talismans held by Bregon's sisters, who, in turn, curse the entire Stewart bloodline. Armed with this ancestral discovery, Charlie must involve himself in the lives of gods (and their familial squabbles) if he ever wants to reverse the curse.

"We’ve been stewing on this for CENTURIES…,” said the two Barrowmans and Carole Barrowman and Lewis in an official release. “We’re so excited the world can finally read Acursian. Beni Lobel’s dark, entrenched style seduces from the first panel. Goddesses and gods, fate and time be damned, Charlie Stewart is embarking on a sometimes dangerous — sometimes sexy — sometimes strange and magical quest to get his life back, and you can come along for the ride.”

“We began this journey with John, Carole, and Erika over a year ago and are thrilled to see this project coming to fruition in such a gripping story that features—for the first time ever—John starring in his very own comic book, one that truly reflects his love for Celtic lore,” said Robert Napton, Senior Vice President of Legendary Comics.

Acursian becomes available on the Line Webtoon app at 11:59 EST on Thursday, Sep. 13.

“We’re beyond excited to continue our partnership with Legendary and can’t wait for our readers to experience the world of Acursian that John, Carole, Erika, and Beni are creating,” said Webtoon Head of Content Tom Akel.
