With Jodie Whittaker and the rest of the cast currently hard at work filming showrunner Chris Chibnall's Season 11 of Doctor Who in Gosport, fans have been flocking to the location to snap set pics of the BBC series. Now one of those pics has seemingly revealed that a certain classic character may make a long-awaited return.
Whittaker, who plays the 13th Doctor, was spotted filming scenes in and around the redesigned TARDIS a couple of days ago for an episode that will apparently include K9, as you can see in the set pics below.
Created in 1977 as a faithful robotic companion to the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker), the last time we saw K9 on Doctor Who was back in the Season 4 finale (of New Who) “Journey’s End,” which aired back in 2008. That was when David Tennant was still running around the universe as the Tenth Doctor. K9 had previously appeared in the Season 2 episode “School Reunion,” which also saw the return of the late Elisabeth Sladen as former companion Sarah Jane Smith in a nostalgic guest-starring stint. He then crossed over to the Who spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007-2011) as her companion.
It’s currently unclear whether K9’s appearance alongside Whittaker's 13th Doctor will be just a brief nod, or if he’ll stick around a bit longer. But (if true) this will mark the first time K9 has shown up on Doctor Who in 10 years.
Despite the fact that we’re getting a new Doctor, three new companions, a new showrunner, a spiffy new logo, a redesigned TARDIS and more (including a new composer since Murray Gold left after the recent Christmas special, and a new FX company in Double Negative), it’s great to see not everything will be new, since Chris Chibnall will also be bringing back some oldies.
What do you think about K9's return to Doctor Who?
