Break out your dice and calculate your THAC0, because this quest is gonna be a dangerous one.

Who could have imagined the journey that tabletop gaming would take when Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson came together back in 1974? These two men, also known as the creators of Dungeons & Dragons, knew they'd made something they loved, but they couldn't have known how far that love would spread.

But if you know anything of the history of Dungeons & Dragons, then you know it's not exactly a tale of two heroes who got their happy ending. And this new documentary, The Great Kingdom, seems very intent upon revealing some of the ups, downs and difficult truths behind how D&D became so successful, and the sacrifices that were made toward that end.

While the tale itself may not be pretty, there can be no denying that the look of the doc itself is pretty darn gorgeous.

There's no release date for the film yet, but we're no less excited because we think this sometimes ugly, always complex story deserves to be told. And giving the whole thing the appropriate historical context is just icing on the cake.
