He never got a chance to play Miles Morales on the big screen, but it looks like Donald Glover could be in the running for one heck of a Star Wars-related consolation prize.
The actor, likely best known for his cult hit role on Community and rap alter ego Childish Gambino, is reportedly at the top of Lucasfilm’s short list to play the young version of Lando Calrissian in the untitled Han Solo prequel film. The casting news comes from a report at Birth.Movies.Death, which notes an offer may not even be out there yet — just that the filmmakers are leaning heavily in his direction at the moment.
It’s a bit of an outside-the-box direction to take the character, but take a closer look and Glover really could be perfect for the role. We already know he can play humor, and he’s stretched his dramatic legs with roles in The Martian and his upcoming FX series Atlanta. He’s also positively ripped, and would certainly be capable of handling the necessary action for a young, swashbuckling space gambler. You also get the feeling he'd be confident enough to try and live outside the shadow of Billy Dee Williams' take on Lando, in a sense.
Even if they are eyeing Glover for the role, the creative team met with hundreds of actors before deciding on Alden Ehrenreich as the young Han Solo. So, even if it does end up being Glover, he probably still has a few hoops to jump through (assuming he’s even interested in the gig).
The Han Solo film is set to open May 25, 2018.
What do you think of Glover for the role of young Lando? Is he the right man to pilot the Millennium Falcon before Han gets his hands on the wheel?
