Turns out Star Trek: Discovery will have it’s own “Spock,” he just won’t be a Vulcan.
CBS has kept pretty much everything from Star Trek: Discovery under wraps, aside from that vague, but very pretty, trailer a while back. One of the big mysteries was the strange alien played by veteran sci-fi actor Doug Jones — but now we finally know who he’s playing.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jones revealed his character is basically the “Spock” or “Data” of this new series, serving that type of role on the crew. Producer Aaron Harberts also explained that Jones’ Lt. Saru comes from a planet where his people are hunted by a “prey species,” which explains why he can sense death, and he’s the first of his race to make it through Starfleet.
Here’s an excerpt from what Jones had to say about his role:
“[Producers] said Saru is the Spock of the series, he’s the Data of the series — and those are beloved characters that I always connect with whenever I would watch the past incarnations of Star Trek. On Falling Skies, I played an alien species who came to Earth to help the humans fight back the bad aliens who’d taken over, and I was intelligent, well-spoken, had a lot of answers and science-y smart. Saru is all of those things and then some.”
It’s interesting to see how Discovery will play with the typical format of a Starfleet crews and that despite everything that’s changed, some things stay the same. A crew needs a Spock, or in this case, a Saru.
Jones, along with some other Discovery crew members, will also be on hand at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend to talk about the series, so keep an eye out for more news over the next few days.
