How do you like your vampires? Teen drama (Twilight, Vampire Diaries), actiony (Buffy, on DVD, sure, but it's still a classic), sexy (True Blood), comical (Transylmania, Vampire's Assistant) or historical (upcoming Vlad)?

There are so many takes on the vampire mythos these days it's a virtual buffet of undead.

Summit Entertainment, who brought us Twilight and New Moon, are dipping into the vamp well again with a more historical take on the bloodsucking nightwalkers, this time with Vlad.

Vlad is about the young prince Dracula, known in the history books as Vlad the Impaler (1431–1457), the man behind the Dracula myth that Bram Stoker made (even more) famous.

Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam wrote the script, Brad Pitt will produce, and Anthony Mandler, a music-video director (who has made videos for Rhianna, the Killers and Eminem) will direct. Mandler's initial reel so impressed the executives at Summit that they compared it to Zack Snyder's 300. According to Heat Vision Blog, "With Vlad, Summit hopes to make a visually edgy and radical period movie that also will break a new talent."

We're in for a bloody treat, something visually stunning and a unique addition to the Dracula compendium.

Perhaps Vlad will break the romantic-vampire trend and let us see vampires as they used to be seen: as the horrible monsters they are.
