Dream Casting is an imaginative look at the casting process of potential Hollywood projects based on comics and other media. This isn't just about what is being made; this is about what should be made, and who we think should be the stars.
Jack Kirby's solo comics work has been getting a lot of attention from Hollywood, with New Gods on the way from DC/Warner and The Eternals coming from Marvel/Disney. Since it's Halloween season, I thought I'd look at the potential of Kirby's spookiest creation, The Demon.
Etrigan is a demon who was trapped in the human form of Jason Blood by Merlin during the fall of Camelot. In modern times, he takes over Blood's body whenever there's a supernatural threat like Klarion the Witch Boy or the returning Morgaine Le Fay. A Demon movie could be a really fun mix of light-hearted superhero action and old-school gothic horror.
Ray Stevenson as Etrigan the Demon
Sure, Ray Stevenson has already played two Marvel characters, but honestly playing both the title character in Punisher: War Zone and Volstagg in the Thor movies just proves that he's a big guy with impressive range. Put him in some creepy yellow demon makeup and he's our Etrigan.
Domhnall Gleeson as Jason Blood
Meanwhile, Etrigan's human half will be played by Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi). Having separate actors as Jason and Etrigan will help emphasis how different they are, despite being technically the same being.
Jeremy Irons as Merlin
There have been lots of Merlins over the years, but Jeremy Irons will be a memorable one. And even if this movie takes place in the same universe as Justice League (which I'm not sure it should), he'll be unrecognizable as the same guy who played Alfred once he's in wizard garb.
Lara Pulver as Morgaine Le Fay
Lara Pulver (Da Vinci's Demons, Sherlock) can bring a distinctly English charm to this weird Kirby-fied take on the Arthurian sorceress.
Harry Shearer as Theophilus Warly
Harry Shearer (A Mighty Wind, The Simpsons) has such a great old man look and an even better voice. He'll be fantastic as the aging occultist who falls under Morgaine's sway.
Jake Johnson as Harry Matthews
Harry Matthews is particularly human, in contrast to his friend Jason's true nature. Jake Johnson (Jurassic World) may be the most human of actors, so he's ideal for the role.
Dev Patel as Randu Singh
Randu's an important ally to Jason Blood, but his portrayal as an Indian man will need some updating for modern times. Casting Dev Patel (Lion) will be a great start.
Betty Gilpin as Glenda Mark
There's a great story early in The Demon in which Jason Blood's love interest Glenda is possessed by an evil force, which is something I think Betty Gilpin (GLOW) could have a lot of fun with.
Finn Wolfhard as Klarion the Witch Boy
Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, It) has a lot of promise for a teenage actor, and I think with guidance he could absolutely play the omnipotent force of chaos known as Klarion the Witch Boy.
