Dream Casting: Josie and the Pussycats

Dream Casting is an imaginative look at the casting process of potential Hollywood projects based on comics and other media. This isn't just about what is being made; this is about what should be made, and who we think should be the stars.

The 2001 Josie and the Pussycats movie is one of the best comics adaptations of all time. For that matter, the characters are also cool on CW's Riverdale series. However, I'm also a fan of the rebooted Josie and the Pussycats comic that started in 2016, by Marguerite Bennett, Cameron DeOrdio, and Audrey Mok, and today I'm imagining a new movie based on that.

In casting it, I decided not to worry about who can actually sing. We'll get pop stars to dub their voices, for maximum effect. I just wanted a cast that would bring youth and enthusiasm to the project.

Rosie Day as Josie

Rosie Day (Outlander) is super cute and likable but hasn't really found her breakthrough leading role yet. Josie, who is also meant to be super cute and likable, would be perfect for her.

China Anne McClain as Valerie

Valerie is the most serious of the Pussycats, and China Anne McClain (Black Lightning) can strike that balance while still seeming fun and youthful.

Bella Thorne as Melody

The new take on Melody is less of a "dumb blonde" cliché and more of a totally unique sort of weird space cadet. Bella Thorne (Famous in Love) can lean into that and make it funny.

Isabelle Fuhrman as Alexandra Cabot

Alexandra used to be Josie's best friend but became her worst enemy. Isabelle Fuhrman (The Hunger Games) can handle both sides of that equation.

Timothée Chalamet as Alexander Cabot

Alexander is Alexandra's brother, a self-styled jetsetter and monarch of a made-up Antarctic nation. Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) would play that ridiculousness with a straight face.

Dacre Montgomery as Alan M

Alan isn't a bad guy; he just doesn't work out as the Pussycats' manager. Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things) is just handsome and untrustworthy enough for the part.

Carrie Coon as Pepper

In the old comics Pepper is the same age as Josie and the band, but she's been rebooted as the owner of a local bar and music venue, which works well for her. Carrie Coon (The Leftovers) will be great as one of Josie's biggest supporters.

Eris Baker as Felicity Mountain

You probably don't know Eris Baker's name yet, but you'll recognize her as Randall's older daughter on This is Us. She may not be an actual musical prodigy, but she has the star quality that Felicity Mountain needs.

Mackenyu as Tatsuya Nakamura

Tatsuya Nakamura is an ally of Alexander's who becomes the Pussycats' new manager. Mackenyu (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable) has a background in music and would bring his own unique presence to the film.
