Dream Casting is an imaginative look at the casting process of potential Hollywood projects based on comics and other media. This isn't just about what is being made; this is about what should be made, and who we think should be the stars.
It's almost Christmas! The perfect time to imagine a movie based on Klaus, the comic by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora, in which Santa Claus is reimagined as a superheroic figure in a fantasy setting. There are direwolves, swordfights, psychedelic alien elves, oppressed children in need, and a demon with its eye on all the wicked boys and girls.
Despite its trappings, Klaus isn't a cynical "adult" take on Christmas; it's a story with a lot of warmth and the real Christmas spirit at its center. It really would make a fantastic Christmas movie, and I think I've found the perfect cast.
Jason Momoa as Klaus
This Santa is a musclebound action hero, but he's also full of warmth and charisma. In other words, this is the perfect vehicle for Jason Momoa (Justice League).
David Tennant as Baron Magnus
Despite still being beloved for Doctor Who, David Tennant is actually really great at playing detestable villains, as any Jessica Jones fan can tell you. Magnus is just the sort of Yuletime-hating, joy-crushing, child-sacrificing human monster Tennant would be great as.
Jessica Chastain as Lady Dagmar
Dagmar seems like just another villain at first, but turns out to be a far more complicated character. Jessica Chastain (Molly's Game) would do great at making that turn in a believable way.
Jack Dylan Grazer as Jonas
Jack Dylan Grazer (It) can play younger than his age, and he has a spooky quality that will serve him well as Magnus and Dagmar's spoiled son.
Iain Glen as Karl Linkvist
Iain Glen (Game of Thrones) will need to grow a mightier beard, but this weary city guardsman with a good heart under a tough shell is right in his acting wheelhouse.
Mackenzie Crook as Gunnar Mikkelsen
Mackenzie Crook (Game of Thrones) always looks kind of tired and weary, which is what we need for the role of a harried miner.
Noah Schnapp as Finn Mikkelsen
Noah Schnapp will get to be less spooky than he is on Stranger Things as the kid who helps out Klaus when he needs it most.
Adam Driver as the Demon
The Demon will almost certainly have a CGI or mo-cap element, but Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) is a tall and very physical actor with a commanding voice, so if he's up for doing a small role as a Christmas demon, nobody's going to tell him no.
