Dream Casting is an imaginative look at the casting process of potential Hollywood projects based on comics and other media. This isn't just about what is being made; this is about what should be made, and who we think should be the stars.
Since it's Halloween time, we're focusing on spooky and Gothy comics this month. Today's pick is Peculia, a classic indie strip from cartoonist Richard Sala, originally from the comic Evil Eye. Peculia is an odd young woman who lives alone in a Gothic house with servants, and mostly just goes on walks. However, her walks tend to be interrupted by mad scientists, evil cults, and literal monsters.
Peculia could work in a movie or on TV, but what I really want is an adaptation that embraces the kooky aesthetic of the comic with wild costumes, off-kilter dialogue, and weird Cabinet of Dr. Caligari-esque sets.
Brianna Hildebrand as Peculia
Brianna Hildebrand is a lot of fun in the Deadpool movies, but I'd like to see her play a totally different character, and I think she has a lot of potential to embody the Gothy queer ingenue that is Peculia.
Odessa Young as Justine
Odessa Young (Assassination Nation) has a lot of promise as an actress, and she can play a combination of strong and brittle that I think would be perfect for Peculia's constant foil, Justine.
Dan Starkey as Ambrose
Dan Starkey (Doctor Who) is a small guy with a great British-accented voice, and he'll be perfect as Peculia's diminutive but spectacularly reliable butler.
Darren Criss as Obscurus
Obscurus is a half pulp supervillain and half weirdo whose texts you ignore after a boring date. Darren Criss can bring some of that creep factor he was so good at portraying in American Crime Story.
Braun Strowman as Cronk
Peculia's Frankenstein-esque friend Cronk doesn't need to do much besides be huge. It's the kind of part I always like to give to pro wrestlers, and Braun Strowman is one of the biggest.
Brian Doyle-Murray as the Innkeeper
Brian Doyle-Murray (Caddyshack, Lot 49) is still the greatest at doing what he does, and he also looks exactly like this character. I can already imagine him shouting about how Death is at his door.
Gigi and Bella Hadid as the Scullery Maids
These girls don't have much more than cameo roles, so I figured bringing in a couple of popular models would be a fun approach.
Matt Smith as a Questionable Gentleman
This guy's a creep with a bit of a Doctor Frankenstein vibe. Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown) is great at being weird and obsessive, plus the top hat will really look perfect on him.
Laurence Fishburne as Doctor Trépan
Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Black-Ish) usually plays likable characters, but he'll make a fantastic mad doctor, especially if he has those little tiny glasses and the pointy goatee.
