Dream Casting: Super-Pro K.O.

Dream Casting is an imaginative look at the casting process of potential Hollywood projects based on comics and other media. This isn't just about what is being made; this is about what should be made, and who we think should be the stars.

As you may already know, this is the beginning of WrestleMania weekend, the most important time of the year for professional wrestling and its fans. That's why this seemed like the perfect time to take a look at Super-Pro K.O., a fantastic series of graphic novels about wrestling by cartoonist Jarrett Williams.

Super-Pro K.O. focuses on a young man named Joe, doing his best to get ahead in the strange world of wrestling. Surrounding him is a large ensemble of wrestlers and related folks who each have their own agendas and motivations. In imagining a Super-Pro K.O. movie, I've mostly cast actual pro-wrestlers, because a lot of them can already act better than most actors could wrestle.

Johnny Gargano as Joe Somiano

There are a lot of wrestlers in this cast, but I had originally planned to cast an actor in the lead. That is, until I realized what a perfect match NXT's Johnny Gargano is for Joe Somiano. If you've ever seen Gargano, you know he has the charisma to be a movie star.

joe_manganiello_as_romeo_colossus.jpg

Joe Manganiello as Romeo Colossus

Romeo is a big-time baseball player who moves into wrestling to the annoyance of many wrestlers who've paid their dues. Manganiello (Justice League) is perfect for the charismatic ladies' man.

Xavier Woods as Sensational Sike

Xavier Woods of the New Day is definitely a wrestler who could be a great actor. He's also a dead ringer for Sike if you give him a big enough afro.

ec3_as_king_crown_jr.jpg

EC3 as King Crown Jr.

Put a wig on former TNA star and NXT newcomer EC3 and he'll have that perfect old-school wrestling look to play troubled champion King Crown Jr.

rachel_keller_as_jessica.jpg

Rachel Keller as Jessica

Rachel Keller (Legion) will look amazing glammed up for the part of ring announcer Jessica, and she'll be good on the mic as well.

terry_crews_as_clemont_swagger.jpg

Terry Crews as Clemont Swagger

Swagger is a former boxing champ and still working on his wrestling moves. He also has the kind of physique that few people can match, but Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) is one of them.

zelina_vega_as_elicity.jpg

Zelina Vega as Elicity

Elicity is a manager/wrestler, which is exactly what Zelina Vega does on NXT. Beyond that, Vega's skills on the mic make me think she could give a great acting performance as well.

big_e_as_the_other.jpg

Big E as the Other

Big E of the New Day not only has one of the most amazing bodies in wrestling, he's a master of controlling it; not just to wrestle, but to dance and do comedy bits. That's why I think he can give a great masked performance as the mysterious and creepy Other.

becky_lynch_as_cherry.jpg

Becky Lynch as Cherry

Cherry's not a wrestler, but she can definitely handle herself. Becky Lynch is a wrestler, and the former SmackDown Women's Champion, in fact, but she also has a background in acting.

rey_mystero_as_el_heroe.jpg

Rey Mysterio as El Heroe

I always say that only a real luchador should play a luchador, and besides that, Heroe is a veteran wrestler and family man, which is why Rey Mysterio is perfect for the part.

anna_kendrick_as_nell_awesomeness.jpg

Anna Kendrick as Nell Awesomeness

Anna Kendrick (The Accountant) would bring some Hollywood legitimacy to this cast full of wrestlers, and she'll do a great job as no-nonsense producer Nell.

Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan on Commentary

I considered casting real wrestling commentators as Info and Buzzsaw, but I decided to go with funny guys from Saturday Night Live instead. Bobby Moynihan is a known wrestling fan, and he and Mikey Day always work great together.
