Dream Casting is an imaginative look at the casting process of potential Hollywood projects based on comics and other media. This isn't just about what is being made; this is about what should be made, and who we think should be the stars.
The world lost a legend when Stan Lee, the man who made Marvel Comics a thing, died on Monday at age 95. I wanted to pay tribute to Stan this week, but it was a challenge for the simple reason that most of his famous creations have been adapted for the screen once, if not several times.
Ultimately, I turned to one of the comics Stan Lee was most proud of. "Parable" was a two-part Silver Surfer story first published in 1988. It was written in the Marvel Method by Stan and drawn by the legendary French comics artist Moebius. It tells a story about the Silver Surfer and his former master Galactus on an Earth without a Fantastic Four or Avengers. There are no superheroes in this world, only a population of fallible humans who nearly destroy themselves in reaction to the arrival of a cosmic-powered god from the stars.
Ryan Gosling as Silver Surfer
Doing this column for as long as I have, I've frequently wondered what would be the right superhero role for Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049), and I think I finally found it. If anyone could sell the Silver Surfer's unique Stan Lee-written dialogue, not to mention getting in good enough shape to be this close to naked, it's Gosling.
Dennis Haysbert as Galactus
I've suggested Haysbert (24, Reverie) as Galactus before, and I stand by it. He has a great a face and a perfect deep, booming voice.
Michael Pitt as Colton Candell
Candell is a televangelist who preaches the gospel of Galactus (despite having no idea what Galactus actually wants). Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire, Ghost in the Shell) has played his share of creeps, and could really bring this character to life.
Fiona Dourif as Elyna Candell
Fiona Dourif (USA's The Purge) has also played some creepy roles, but it would be interesting to see her reverse that here, as Colton's sister who becomes the Silver Surfer's ally.
Keith David as the Mayor
Who better to play the mayor of the city where Galactus lands than sci-fi legend Keith David (The Thing, They Live)?
Jeremy Davies as the Fanatic
Colton Candell's right hand man is a dangerous weirdo, which is the sort of part Jeremy Davies (Lost, Sleepy Hollow) has always specialized in.
Lilly Singh as Shalla Bal
The Silver Surfer's long lost love would only appear in flashback, but an actress as striking as Lilly Singh (Fahrenheit 451) can make an immediate impression.
