Dream Casting is an imaginative look at the casting process of potential Hollywood projects based on comics and other media. This isn't just about what is being made; this is about what should be made, and who we think should be the stars.
The Terrifics is a DC Comics riff on a Marvel Comics classic. Like the Fantastic Four, the Terrifics are a quartet of superheroes led by a scientific genius with an emphasis on exploring the unknown. They have a stretchy guy (Plastic Man), a gruff down-to-Earth monster (Metamorpho), and a young woman with the power to fade away (Phantom Girl).
But The Terrifics is more than just a pastiche. Writer Jeff Lemire, alongside artists Ivan Reis and Evan "Doc" Shaner, have created a strong superteam story that never stops feeling fun and upbeat, despite containing plenty of drama. Just for fun, here's a cast that could bring a live-action Terrifics to life.
Leslie Odom Jr. as Mister Terrific
Actor/singer Leslie Odom Jr. more than proved himself as a potential action star in Murder on the Orient Express, and he can do a great job portraying Terrific's uncommon intelligence as well as his sadness.
Sam Rockwell as Metamorpho
Obviously Metamorpho will largely be a CGI character, but Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2) will be perfect as voice of the grumpy, put-upon superhero.
John Mulaney as Plastic Man
Plastic Man will obviously involve a lot of effects as well, but underneath them should be comedian John Mulaney, who has both the perfect look for the character and the comic timing to play him.
Sasha Lane as Phantom Girl
Sasha Lane has recently been proving her mettle in indie films like Hearts Beat Loud and The Miseducation of Cameron Post. She definitely has what it takes to play ethereal interdimensional teen Linnya Wazzo.
Rachel McAdams as Sapphire Stagg
Rachel McAdams always gives it her all, even if she was absolutely wasted in Doctor Strange. Her effervescence would be the perfect contrast to a curmudgeonly Rockwell.
Brian Cox as Simon Stagg
Brian Cox (X2) is great at these kinds of off-kilter old man roles. He can probably even pull off an approximation of Simon Stagg's ridiculous hairstyle.
Rory McCann as Java
Rory McCann (Game of Thrones) will need some prosthetics to play a caveman, but you can see it, yes?
Rutina Wesley as Paula Holt
Mister Terrific's late wife only appears briefly in flashback, but obviously it's important that those scene pack an emotional punch. Rutina Wesley (Queen Sugar) will help that happen.
Dave Bautista as Algon
Obviously Dave Bautista is great as a funny, friendly character in Guardians of the Galaxy, but as Metamorpho's evil counterpart he can play less against type and just be huge and menacing. I think he can handle that, too.
