Dream Casting is an imaginative look at the casting process of potential Hollywood projects based on comics and other media. This isn't just about what is being made; this is about what should be made, and who we think should be the stars.
The Unexpected is a new monthly comic from DC by Steve Orlando, Cary Nord, and Ryan Sook. There's only a couple of issues out, but I decided to go ahead and cast a hypothetical movie version, just because I'm enjoying the book so much.
It opens with a woman named Firebrand, who has to get in a fight every day or she dies. She meets a wizard named Neon, and from there things just get weirder and weirder. Even though I don't know where the story is going, I already know I'd watch a big budget movie version.
Samantha Jo as Firebrand
Samantho Jo (Wonder Woman) hasn't done that much acting, but she can fight for real, which is important for Firebrand. She'll also be able to pull off the look like few could.
Gael García Bernal as Neon the Unknown
Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) is a great actor with a lot to bring to the table, beyond just being able to still look handsome with his hair all the way over his eyes.
John Hawkes as Alden Quench
This is one of the easiest roles I've ever cast, to be honest. A skinny, grimy-looking guy who seems a little goofy until you realize he's terrifying? That's a role for John Hawkes (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) if ever there was one.
Hannah Hart as Joy
Hannah Hart of My Drunk Kitchen has only done a bit of acting here and there, but there's nobody more suited for this small role as a cute blonde lesbian.
Conan Stevens as Ascendant
Maybe I'm old school, but I don't think you always need a CGI character when you can just cast a huge guy and paint him a funny color. Conan Stevens (Game of Thrones) will look great painted blue in weird armor.
Gwendoline Christie as the Viking Judge
On the subject of big people from Game of Thrones, I can't think of anyone more suited to playing a Kirbified Viking-esque warrior woman than Gwendoline Christie.
Naomi Watts as June Robbins
June is a former Challenger of the Unknown, and while we don't yet know much about her role in this story, I do know that Naomi Watts (Twin Peaks: The Return) can handle just about anything.
Bianca Belair as Phade
Phade is another character who seems to require a specific physicality, and WWE wrestler Bianca Belair has the build and the look to pull it off.
Glenn Jacobs as Onimar Synn
Glenn Jacobs, also know as Kane, is also a wrestler/actor, but he has a lot more experience at both. And he's another huge guy who also looks like Onimar Synn. Like I said before, you don't need CGI, just put makeup on him.
