Dredd producer Adi Shankar breaks down what it'll take to get a sequel made

Though the film was a box office dud, Dredd is still an awesome movie — and a fierce little contingent of fans is still clamoring for a sequel. 

Turns out the answer to what exactly it’ll take to get Dredd 2 made is a bit harder to explain than a few-sentence soundbite might allow. So producer Adi Shankar (the guy behind that recent Power/Rangers fan film) has put together a 6+ minute clip that basically serves as a crash course in how the film industry works.

The point is obviously filtered through a Dredd-tinted lens, but it’s fascinating to see all these convoluted concepts broken down to their most basic components. Where the budgets come from, which territories matter, and the things that can save just about any franchise (see: The Rock) are all on the docket. As for Dredd? They’ll need a lot of things to make a sequel happen, and sadly, it sounds like the odds are fairly long at this point.

“For Dredd 2 to happen, two things need to happen. One, all of the distributors from the international territories need to re-acquire the film. Two, we need to get a U.S. distributor, Lionsgate, or somebody else, and that's not something I'm concerned about… At it's previous budget level, Dredd lost almost every distributor money, so there are only three options, as I see it. One, lower the f---ing budget. Maybe Dredd 2 is found footage? I don't know. I wouldn't watch it, but maybe it's found footage. 

Two, bring out a filmmaker who would really move the needle, someone like David Fincher. But that's not realistic. That's not going to happen, because filmmakers who would move the needle aren't in the business of directing sequels to someone else's franchise. That's just now how it works. Three, a movie star. Maybe we pair Karl Urban with another movie star who boosts the value of the film. Maybe we get The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) in and save the franchise, because The Rock saves everybody's franchises.”
