It’s been two years since Dredd blew our minds — and bombed at the box office — but fans are still campaigning for a sequel. Well, turns out we’re getting the next-best thing.

Adi Shankar, producer of the first Dredd film, has secretly been filming his own seven-part Dredd miniseries focused on the Dark Judges arc. That’s right — Shankar has created his own, unofficial Dredd project that’ll be released for free online later this month.

It’s an ambitious move, and it’s great to see Shankar’s love for the character and franchise outweigh the studio obstacles. Plus, Shankar has a legit track record when it comes to unofficial spinoff projects. He produced the stellar Punisher: Dirty Laundry short starring Thomas Jane, as well as the trippy Venom: Truth in Journalism short starring True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten.

If he sets his sights on something, he usually pulls it off. Aside from the fact that it focuses on the Dark Judges, we don’t know much else. But we’d think it should definitely have the same gritty tone we loved about the first film.

No word on which cast members, if any, might return — but stars Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby have expressed a ton of love for the franchise. They've campaigned as hard as the fans have for a continuation, so you'd think they wouldn't mind a return trip to Mega-City One. So it’d be no surprise to have Urban suit up once again in his trademark Judge gear. Fingers crossed.

Are you glad to hear Dredd is (kinda) coming back to life?
