WIRE Buzz: Darkwing Duck event gets dangerous; Scott Pilgrim OST drops Sex Bob-Omb; more

Disney XD's DuckTales is about to get a lot more dangerous.

According to co-executive producer, writer, and story editor Frank Angones, the animated series — which will be returning with new episodes on Sept. 21 — will also be airing a special Darkwing Duck "event" in the form of an hourlong episode, titled "Let's Get Dangerous!"

While there are no specifics as to what the episode will be about — or whether it will lead off into a spinoff like the '90s series that came before it — it's safe to assume that both Drake Mallard (Harley Quinn's Chris Diamantopolous) and Launchpad McQuack (Saturday Night Live's Beck Bennet) will feature in it.

In the original cartoon, Drake was a suburban dad who took on the alter ego of Darkwing Duck to fight crime, with the help of Launchpad, his sidekick. However, the recent reboot reimagines Drake as an up-and-coming actor who replaces Jim Starling (a nod to the character's original voice actor) in the role of Darkwing Duck in a movie based on him, as here the character is the fictional star of an old superhero show. But when the movie gets canceled, Launchpad, who is now Scrooge McDuck's (David Tennant) crash-prone personal chauffeur and pilot as well as a Darkwing Duck super-fan, encourages him to take up the mantle of the beloved terror in the night and actually become Darkwing Duck after all.

Drake (as Darkwing) has appeared on the series' show-within-a-show a few times since then, but this is the first time in a while he'll be front and center as the titular hero.

This new batch of DuckTales episodes will kick off on Disney XD on Sept. 21, with the Darkwing Duck event airing on Oct. 19.

It's been a long 10 years, but fans of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World will finally get to the rock out to the movie's full original soundtrack.

Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead), director of the cult classic film, tweeted the news as part of the movie's 10th-anniversary celebration, announcing that ABKO Music and Records will be re-releasing two soundtracks to the film.

The first will be Nigel Gorich's score, which will be getting its first-ever release in physical form, while the second will be a special-edition OST that will feature 24 additional minutes of songs from Sex Bob-Omb (Scott's band within the movie), singer-songwriter Beck, and a special version of the band Metric's "Black Sheep" sung by none other than Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) herself.

Beck actually wrote and sang four of the songs performed by Sex Bob-Omb within the movie.

Scott Pilgrim revolves around its eponymous character (played by Arrested Development's Michael Cera), a broke musician in a Toronto-based band who falls for a girl named Ramona Flowers (Birds of Prey's Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and must battle a League of Evil Exes before he can finally date her. At the same time, he and his band are competing in a music competition where they must face off against other bands in hopes of getting a record deal. Chris Evans (Captain America), Brandon Routh (DC's Legends of Tomorrow), Aubrey Plaza (Little Demon), Mae Whitman (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Anna Kendrick (Twilight), and Alison Pill (Picard) also star.

ABKCO has yet to announce release dates for either soundtracks or a full track list for either.

With AMC reopening over 100 theaters starting next week (and with tickets being only 15 cents), some movies that shuttered early due to the pandemic may go back for a second swing at a theatrical release.

The first of these will be Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot, from this past March. Based on a Valiant comic book of the same name, the film starred Diesel as a U.S. Marine killed in action, only to be revived later by a shadowy organization. In addition to his new lease on life, he gains superhuman abilities thanks to nanites inside his body that also heal him from pretty much anything. Think sci-fi Wolverine meets the Punisher.

Also starring Eiza Gonzalez and Guy Peace, the movie only had a 4-day theatrical run before the pandemic forced AMC to close all theaters across the nation. Later that month, Bloodshot went to VOD instead, ultimately grossing $37 million worldwide. For Starz subscribers, it’s currently available to stream.

If Bloodshot isn’t your flavor, never fear. AMC will also have Sonic the Hedgehog, I Still Believe, and The Burnt Orange Heresy return to theaters for their first week of reopening. However, Bloodshot will be the only one of these to be eligible for the one-day-only promotion where movie tickets are 15 cents. It remains unclear whether other films, such as February’s Birds of Prey, will attempt a second theatrical tour as well.

Should everything go well, AMC plans to reopen nearly 2/3 of its theaters by the time both the infamously delayed New Mutants and Tenet come to theaters, on Aug. 28 and Sept. 3, respectively.
