Following the release of the first poster for its upcoming animated movie late last week, Disney has released the first teaser trailer for Moana, featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Johnson stars as the demi-god Maui, and newcomer Auli'i Cravahlo plays the role of the movie’s young heroine -- and the House of Mouse’s first Polynesian princess -- Moana.
The movie is set in Oceania in the South Pacific and follows the adventures of Moana, who uses her talents as a navigator to set out on a voyage to discover a fabled land. She is joined on her seafaring adventures by the demi-god Maui.
Moana is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who wrote and directed Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. The movie also features the voice talents of Philippa Soo (Smash) and Alan Tudyk (Firefly, I, Robot, Con Man) with songs and music by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), Opetaia Foa’i and Marc Mancina. Below is the movie’s official synopsis:
Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped — and no one today knows why.
From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes ‘Moana,’ a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, she meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds.
Moana is slated to open right on time for the holiday season on Nov. 23.
