One of Stan Winston's most horrifying SFX creations was for his 1988 directorial debut in the cult horror flick, Pumpkinhead.
The dark fairy tale spawned three direct-to-video sequels: 1994's Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings, 2006's Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes, and 2007's Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud. A reboot of the franchise is currently in development by Saw producer Peter Block, who's hopeful that a second Pumpkinhead theatrical feature will stalk theaters later this year.
Now that a licensing deal has been struck with MGM, Dynamite is hoping to accelerate the Pumpkinhead craze seen at Comic-Cons and horror film festivals by hatching their own resurrection of the property starring the hideous clawed creature of vengeance, in the form of fresh comic series and graphic novels.
Here's the official press release:
"Look - the 1980s was a renaissance for horror films, introducing thrill-seeking audiences to so many iconic murderers and monsters. Pumpkinhead is not only one of the most visually terrifying of the breed, but also one of the most tragic - it's the very definition of a Revenge Tragedy. There's a human story to it that affects us so deeply, so profoundly - how grief can unlock an insatiable darkness within even the noblest person. Dynamite's proud to resurrect this demon of vengeance, to explore the murky depths of the human soul in all-original comics, coming soon!"
There's not been any mention yet of the creative team chosen, but we'll deliver the news once it's announced.
Are you faithful fans of Pumpkinhead, and do you approve of Dynamite's delving deep into the monstrous mythology for its new horror venture?
