Not to be left out of the Holiday Special time of year, Dynamite Entertainment is ringing in a dose of barbarian cheer as the crimson-tressed Red Sonja scores her own deluxe December issue for the very first time.

Red Sonja first hit the literary scene as Red Sonya of Rogatino, a sword-and-sorcery heroine in Robert E. Howard's 1934 short story "The Shadow of the Vulture." The She-Devil With a Sword was further defined for Marvel Comics in 1973 by superstars Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith with a tiny name variation and sudden relocation to Conan's Hyborian Age.

Written by Amy Chu (KISS, Green Hornet) and Erik Burnham (Ghostbusters, Vampirella/Dejah Thoris), the creative team behind the mainline Red Sonja title, this fierce and festive 40-page Red Sonja Holiday Special was just released and would make an enticing gift for fantasy aficionados of all ages.

It spotlights simmering cover artwork by Leonardo Romero (Hawkeye) and atmospheric interior art by Ricardo Jaime (The Shadow) as Red Sonja drifts back in time and reminisces about the occasion she and Sir Max rescued an inebriated Santa from the Grinch (Kulan Gath) and begins to understand the true meaning of Christmas.

"I'm pretty sure it's never been done before, so I was so excited when they asked if I had an idea for a holiday special," co-author Amy Chu told SYFY WIRE.  "I mentioned it to a few people, and they were like, say what? But it totally fits with the first arc of my run. Erik Burnham rocked the script details, and the art from Ricardo Jaime, by the way, is STUNNING. I wanted to make it fun, but meaningful issue, so I hope a lot of people pick it up!"

Also showcased in this wintry, action-packed offering is a Roy Thomas Red Sonja story first featured in Savage Sword of Conan #23 from 1977, co-written by Claire Noto and drawn by Frank Thorne, now newly recolored for the first time ever by Mike Kelleher.

“I love working with Amy in general, but specifically on Red Sonja. I think we found a great rhythm in the last few issues of volume four and I'm excited to see what kind of shenanigans we can get the She-Devil into,” Burnham added in a Dynamite press release. “Amy and I will talk about a few ideas, then she'll go off and write out an outline, filling it with everything she wants. I'll get her outline, find some surprises, and then try to surprise her as well when I build the final script. We've talked through several ideas for what a Sonja holiday special would be like, and I can't wait to see where we land!”
