Early box-office numbers say Pacific Rim might not bomb after all

Despite some pretty solid reviews, the early box-office buzz has indicated that Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi epic Pacific Rim is destined to be a bomb. But some super-early box-office stats show there could be a lot more fans out there than had been predicted.

The $185 million monsters-vs.-mechs extravaganza was initially estimated to take in as little as $25 million on its opening weekend — which would make it a pretty massive flop.

But some new numbers show things might be looking a whole lot brighter. The film has racked up 60 percent of the Fandango advance tickets for the weekend, indicating it might actually have a shot of beating out Grown Ups 2 and Despicable Me 2 — which were both expected to push Pacific Rim down to third place.

For the sake of comparison, Pacific Rim is currently outpacing recent hit World War Z, which overcame some bad buzz itself to end its opening weekend with a very respectable $66 million.

Of course, we won’t know anything concrete until the final bell dings on Sunday night, but it sounds like all those positive reviews might be turning the tide. What do you think? Will you be watching Pacific Rim this weekend?
