We’ve heard of cruel and unusual punishments before, but this definitely falls into the realm of Stranger.

In one of the best public safety moves we’ve encountered this Stranger Things season, the East Lansing Police Department in Michigan is threatening would-be perps with a fate worse than jail: jail plus Stranger Things 2 spoilers!

As effective as you’d expect such a grave threat to be, according to East Lansing Police’s Social Media Officer David Dalen, East Lansing is thankfully already a pretty safe community, so crime hasn’t exactly gone down since Sunday morning’s tweet. But social media followers have certainly gone up, what with nearly 4,000 retweets and 16,000 likes.

While speaking this morning on the phone, Dalen told us that’s one of the goals of the Department’s often entertaining, meme-friendly social posts: to gain more followers, and reach more people, in case something serious happens and they do have to get the word out. It also helps to “humanize police officers and build trust with the community.”

Because we’re more alike than different, after all. Example #1: Police officers watch Stranger Things, just like everyone else. Which is actually where the idea for the now-viral tweet stemmed from.

“In our department, a lot of the officers watch the show, and a lot of folks around the office were worried about [Season 2] spoilers,” said Dalen. Which makes sense, considering how great of a role model Chief Hopper is!
