Yesterday, news hit that Ed Skrein, only a week after being cast, stepped down from his role in the upcoming Hellboy film. The white Brit had been cast as Ben Daimio, a character who, in the BPRD comic books, is a Japanese-American character, whose heritage plays a major role in the character's development.
Today, many are hailing Skrein for his thoughtful response to another case of potential whitewashing (something which has plagued actors on recent Hollywood films Ghost in the Shell and Doctor Strange). While Skrein's departure in no way guarantees that a Japanese-American actor will get the role, it should certainly give director Neil Marshall reason to reconsider his casting choice.
Below are just some of the celebrities backing up Skrein on Twitter, including David Harbour, Riz Ahmed, John Boyega, Daniel Dae Kim, Jessica Chastain, Ming-Na Wen, Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.
