Since 1978, Wendy and Richard Pini's seminal fantasy comic series, Elfquest, has been released independently, through Marvel and DC and made available again online for free. It has had toys made for it, animations crafted, role-playing games both PC and table-top played. Now it may finally become a feature film.
The epic and sprawling fantasy series that takes place on the World of Two Moons is one of those character pieces that covers so much ground and has been around for so long that it's probably had some influence on most genre writers whether they know it or not.
As for a film, this is not the first attempt. Warner Bros. supposedly had it in development for years but allowed the rights to lapse recently, leaving producers (and fans) Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes the opportunity to scoop up the property.
The Pinis themselves seem pleased with the news, saying, "With their deep love and understanding of the property, they represent a new direction for ElfQuest ... new creative energy and new connections in the larger media."
You can get a glimpse of what could be by checking out a short that Thorpe and Rhodes have already produced as fans of the series, below.
