After making her debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Captain America: Civil War — and it turns out there’s a good reason she wasn’t in all those early promo shots.
Olsen chatted with MTV about her second foray into the MCU with Civil War, and teased that her character will prove to be a “wild card” as Iron Man faces off with Captain America. Most keen-eyed fans noticed Scarlet Witch was absent from the promo shots that confirmed Cap’s team would be comprised of Falcon, the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye and Agent 13; and Iron Man’s team will include War Machine, Black Panther, Vision and Black Widow.
Here’s an excerpt from what she dropped about her role:
“[Scarlet Witch] is doing alright. She’s confused, she’s conflicted. She’s found some people she thinks she connects with, but she’s doing alright. They released images of Team Cap and Team Iron Man. She wasn’t there. She’s always the wild card. I like being the wild card.
“It’s not a new hand technique per say. We’re trying to grow her movement as a whole… (movement coach) Jenny [White] and I have great pride in trying to make this a huge transformation — the next time we see her — of her abilities.”
Early buzz has indicated Scarlet Witch will eventually find her way over to Captain America’s side, though it sounds like that decision will come with a bit of a journey in regard to the narrative. It would also go a long way toward balancing the power scales, considering The Vision is on Team Iron Man.
