Elon Musk reveals first look at SpaceX’s first-ever space suit

SpaceX is obviously developing its own spaceships, so it’s no surprise the private space firm would also be working on its own space suit. Now we finally have our first peek — and it looks pretty great.

Founder Elon Musk has revealed the first look at SpaceX’s spacesuit, noting that the version shown in the photo below is actually a functioning suit (as opposed to a mock-up) tested up to double vacuum pressure. The suit is clean and elegant, and Musk noted it was “incredibly hard” to balance aesthetics and function. It also has a bit of a Daft Punk vibe going on, and actually feels like something you might see in a modern sci-fi movie (that’s meant as a compliment), as opposed to a suit off NASA’s 1980s rack.

These suits will be used by NASA astronauts when they travel inside SpaceX’s Dragon Capsule, which will soon be used to carry crew members to and from the International Space Station (ISS). They could also be the first version of what SpaceX astronauts eventually wear to the Red Planet (assuming the company still plans to explore Mars). This is obviously only the first look, and SpaceX plans to drop more info on the suits in the coming days, but the opening salvo is certainly impressive.

Check out the suit below and let us know what you think:
