Tesla is really embracing the future with a pickup truck inspired by the cyberpunk world of Blade Runner. While the company has only released concept images for its electrical take on the Semi, it is the vehicle that CEO Elon Musk is most excited about.
"I can’t talk about the details, but it’s gonna be like a really futuristic-like cyberpunk, Blade Runner pickup truck," Musk said while appearing on the Recode Decode podcast. "It’s gonna be awesome, it’s gonna be amazing. This will be heart-stopping. It stops my heart. It’s like, oh, it’s great.”
The Tesla Semi (announced last November) has the conventionally large front, but lacks a trailer, which will allow it to go from 0-60 mph in five seconds, per the company's website. That's 10 seconds faster than the current diesel trucks you see out on the road today — doing aways with this archaic form of transportation is the main goal behind this futuristic pickup.
"We wanna get gasoline and diesel pickup trucks off the road [eventually]," said Musk.
Musk isn't worried if the truck is only embraced by a small, niche market.
“I don’t know if a lot of people will buy this pickup truck or not, but I don’t care," he said. ”It’s something I’ve been wanting to make for a long time. And I’ve been iterating sort of designs with [Tesla Chief Designer Franz] Franz [von Holzhausen] ... If there’s only a small number of people that like that truck, I guess we’ll make a more conventional truck in the future. But it’s the thing that I am personally most fired up about. It’s gonna have a lot of titanium.”
