Whenever Emma Stone does publicity for a film these days, it seems as if everyone has one burning question for her: Will Gwen Stacy bite the dust in The Amazing Spider-Man 2?
Before anyone starts hollering, that's not a spoiler: The death of Gwen Stacy at the hands of the Green Goblin is perhaps the most significant moment in Peter Parker's life, second only to the death of his Uncle Ben, not to mention one of the most famous incidents in comic book history.
So it's only natural to assume that at some point—perhaps as soon as the next movie—Peter (Andrew Garfield) will say a tragic goodbye to the love of his life. The fact that Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) has been cast as Mary Jane Watson—the second great love of Peter's life—can only increase the odds that Gwen won't make it to The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
So what does Stone herself have to say about all this? Asked by MTV if Gwen will get snuffed in the next movie (see video below), Stone replied, "Will she? Is it up to you? Did you write the script? Did you ghost-write the script?"
That's not a yes or no. When Woodley's name came up as her potential competition for Peter Parker's heart, Stone simply said, "She's really cool. I went to dinner with her. She's really, really nice. She's a cool girl."
She may be the "cool girl" who takes over as the object of a grief-stricken Peter's affections, should Gwen meet her destiny in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which opens on May 2, 2014.
Do you think Gwen is going bye-bye in the next movie? Should she be shown the door, or should they keep Stone around for another picture?
