Licorice has many uses. It's a nice movie theater snack (for some of us) and it promotes healthy digestion, but it takes a certain kind of mind to think that it would make good art. Artist Jason Mecier apparently has that kind of mind, and the results—portraits of movie icons like E.T., Harry Potter, Willy Wonka and Freddy Krueger—are both impressive and amusing.
The pieces are part of Licorice Flix, an upcoming art show hosted by L.A.-based pop art enthusiast group iam8bit. The show opens tonight and features a number of large-scale licorice portraits of iconic film characters. Though we, of course, love the sci-fi pieces best of all, the show will also include art based on Showgirls, Twin Peaks and the work of the great Charlie Chaplin.
If you're in the L.A. area, you can check out the edible art for yourself. The rest of us will just feast on it with our eyes and hope for future installments.
Who else wants to see a licorice portrait of Jabba the Hutt?
