Take a good long look at the dress, gang. And then let's go down this road together.
Knowing that we were coming up on the 35th anniversary of the release of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, we sat down for a rewatch. If you haven't done so in a while, do. And gather some kids around you for it. You will, undoubtedly, find yourself thinking: "We should all consider being a little bit more like E.T." He’s an environmentalist, he has a huge bright heart, and he’s confident enough to throw on a dress for a tea party with a little girl every once in a while. We're here for it.
The more we paused to look at that dress, though, the more we realized that this look is honestly ready for daywear in 2017. Let us be very clear, the clothes you wear are an expression of who you are. We love all the looks below. But like, ET started this trend, right?
Use of Color
Borrowing from ET's colorful palette, this look says, “I may not be from space, but that doesn't mean I can't also work a crooked shawl. “
Keepin' it breezy
You cannot imagine the kinds of music festivals ET has been to. Honestly, what do we know about the guy’s past except that he’s groovy and nice to be around? Sound familiar? Yes, ET in a dress would do GREAT at Coachella.
Hats. Very important, the hats.
We gave this one points for the hat. ET’s choice of hat (though…arguably Gerty chose the hat for him) is iconic. It’s a little hipster bowler. It’s a little brat pack Molly Ringwald. This, though, happens to be Izumi Kajimoto, chief executive officer of Stetson Worldwide. We’re CERTAIN she’d approve. Also, check her out. What a badass.
The hair is important.
You have to hand it to Gerty. She knew from good hair. It’s a little messy, a little brushed, it’s styled to perfection and doesn’t care who knows it. Just like ET.
Late afternoon California light
Boho-chic at sunset. The look that says, “I’m not from around here and I’d love to go home but I can't find my phone.”
Sidebar with us here for a second.
You know what happens when you search for “ET in a dress?” You find a lot of photos of ET in other dresses. Who says the internet is a wasteland of opinions and robust content marketing plans? This one’s sort of a favorite. Because it seems like it took a really long time. And we feel like ET would be honored by that kind of thing.
Winston the Cat
Team. This. Round of applause for the cat named Winston, who’s dressed like ET in a dress.
Grown up Gertie.
Whatever your opinion about ET’s wardrobe, there’s one person who gets all credit for this and that’s Gertie, played so brilliant by Drew “Alligators in the sewers” Barrymore. Not only did she get ET to spend the day at her awesome tea party, she saw hipster trends 35 years away. Round of applause, Gert. We at Syfy Wire salute you.
