In this edition of our casting roundup, a new sci-fi thriller film announces a trio of stars, while a supernatural racial drama for HBO from Misha Green, Jordan Peele, and J.J. Abrams just landed its star. So, let’s dive right in.

First up, Deadline is reporting that Eva Green (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), and Kathy Bates (American Horror Story) have signed on to star in A Patriot, a sci-fi thriller centering on a future authoritarian state. The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic future in which a police state has cut itself off from the rest of a world where natural resources are scarce. Green plays Kate Jones, a Border Corp Captain who begins to rethink her allegiance to the authoritarian regime for which she works.

A Patriot is currently in pre-production. Dan Pringle is directing a script he co-wrote with Toby Rushton.

Meanwhile, Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Underground) has been tapped to star as the female lead for the supernatural racial drama Lovecraft Country for HBO from Misha Green, Jordan Peele, and J.J. Abrams, a representative from HBO confirmed to SYFY WIRE. Green will write and executive-produce.

Based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country takes place during the Jim Crow era in the 1950s. It follows Atticus Black, a young man who goes on a road trip across America to find his missing father with his friend Letitia Dandridge (Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George. To survive, the trio must overcome not only the racist terrors of white America, but also the evil spirits that could be ripped straight out of an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.

The role reunites Smollett-Bell with Green, as Green co-created and served as showrunner for the WGN America series Underground, on which Smollett-Bell starred as escaped slave Rosalee.

Lovecraft Country is being produced by Oscar winner Jordan Peele (Get Out) and his Monkeypaw Productions, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. Television.
