That on-again, off-again Spider-Man Broadway musical originally meant to open Jan. 16, 2010? Now one of its intended stars is off the project, but even so, the creative team has publicly vowed to have the show up and running sometime this year.

Evan Rachel Wood, who back in June was telling us that the production was going to be "a crazy rock 'n' roll circus show," has dropped out of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Variety reported.

Wood was supposed to have played Mary Jane opposite Reeve Carney as Peter Parker and Alan Cumming as the Green Goblin.

According to the producers, "Evan Rachel Wood has departed Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark due to a scheduling conflict. Casting is underway to find a new Mary Jane to join the rest of the cast in the production."

The musical, with music by U2's Bono and the Edge, had its original schedule derailed due to difficulties securing funds. The budget for the technologically ambitious show, directed by Julie Taymor, has supposedly skyrocketed into the range of $50 million.

With Wood gone, which actress do you think should get caught in Spidey's musical web?
