The video game EVE Online has already created a massive sci-fi world over the past decade, and now it could be making the jump to television.
Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of developer CCP Games, told Wired they are “actively working” to bring the game’s world to TV. The MMORPG is set thousands of years in the future, with humanity spreading out across the Milky Way. But things get really interesting when a stargate (no, not that kind) is discovered, leading to another galaxy called New Eden. From there, the game series weaves a massive saga of warring empires and rich action. No doubt it would make a great (and huge) sci-fi series.
Here’s what Pétursson said about the TV project:
"We're actually exploring that with Ridley Scott's production company and Baltasar Kormákur, an Icelandic director. We’re actively working on that. I think we have some traction on it. It's a very big idea obviously – doing a television series is something that takes years to get going. I think House of Cards took around seven years to get going…
I think there's a huge opportunity to bring EVE Online's stories that have already happened into something like a television series.[Not] a movie – EVE is the size of Game of Thrones, and you couldn't make a movie about Game of Thrones, it's just way too big. EVE Online is at that scale, so I think a TV series is something that makes sense."
Comparing the project to Game of Thrones is a savvy (and timely) move, and it would certainly take a whole lot more than a few hours to conceivably tell this story.
What do you think? Would you tune in for EVE Online: The Series?
