Would it have been wrong for 20th Century Fox to place a Deadpool performer in a prominent spot for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s post-wedding procession through the streets of Windsor? Perhaps. But we think it would have been very funny, and a very Deadpool thing to do. It was an odd coincidence that Deadpool 2’s opening weekend just happened to coincide with the latest royal wedding ceremony. And leave it to the Deadpool marketing team to take advantage of the date with a special occasion of their own.
BBC Radio 1’s Ali Plumb has shared a few pictures of Deadpool 2’s royal wedding style invitations, which seem to hint at a union between Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth and Josh Brolin’s Cable. The invites are even funnier considering that Deadpool and Cable are at each other’s throats in the new movie. But then again, what couple doesn’t have its ups and downs?
It’s easy to forget that Deadpool was introduced as an enemy of Cable and the New Mutants/X-Force when he debuted in 1991. However, Deadpool went on to become a fan-favorite anti-hero whose popularity far exceeded Cable’s.
The two characters were always at odds until they shared a Cable & Deadpool monthly series in 2004, which was written by Deadpool co-creator, Fabian Nicieza. Early in that title, Nicieza established common ground between the two, and revealed that Deadpool had come to admire Cable. Nicieza was also responsible for this dream sequence, which fueled Cable and Deadpool shippers.
Deadpool is fairly fluid with his sexuality, but Cable probably doesn’t share any of those feelings. The current state of their relationship is not good, as they recently tried to kill each other thanks to the machinations of Cable’s evil clone, Stryfe. And that’s the least complicated way we can describe it!
But since Deadpool 2 has done so well at the box office, we won’t be shocked if the duo get a comic book reunion in the near future. Just don’t expect these invites to make an in-universe appearance, except as a way to really annoy Cable.
