It's been a fantastic year for Lara Croft and Tomb Raider fans. First, the Tomb Raider movie brought Ms. Croft to global audiences by way of Alicia Vikander's rugged portrayal of the character, and Mattel even went so far as to release a Barbie doll of the stalwart adventurer. Now, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have formally announced the ending to the rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Though the game was introduced to fans last month in advance of a full reveal trailer, we finally know a little more about the final entry in Lara's origin story.

Now, we can take a look back at all the information we've received in advance of Shadow of the Tomb Raider's release later this year, so if this is the first you're hearing about the title, you can come back and pore over everything in one place. It's going to be an excruciating few months to wait for more Lara, but we can do it. For now, here's everything we know so far about Shadow of the Tomb Raider

After viewing the trailer and the information shared via Square Enix, we can say that Lara is headed to the jungle on a race to "save the world from a Mayan apocalypse," as the official press release states. This closing chapter will apparently see Lara "becoming the tomb raider," as it were, as we get a more human side to the iconic character we've been following this whole time.

Lara initially spends time with her longtime companion Jonah while in Cozumel as the Day of the Dead celebration takes place. After Lara lost her father, the team behind Shadow of the Tomb Raider thought it important to introduce scenes where she's dealing with everyday losses and her "normal" life, as revealed during a Game Informer preview. Though this early scene takes place in Mexico, most of Lara's adventures will happen in Peru as you learn to use the jungles to your advantage and keep out of sight from hostile wildlife that want to snack on you for lunch.

The villainous organization Order of Trinity is back to toy with Lara once more, and new antagonist Dr. Dominguez is looking for a special Mayan artifact that's meant to bring on a chance to "remake the world." Any time anyone uses this phrase, as you likely well know, it never signifies anything positive. As such, Lara's going to have to take him down before he can enact his nefarious plans.

As Shadow of the Tomb Raider takes place just a few months following Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara has taken some time to regroup, but this game will show us just how vulnerable she is and can be when faced with such heady tasks as trying to save the entire world. No pressure, right? From various previews written by attendees at a special Shadow of the Tomb Raider event in Montreal, we can glean that Lara is not only a little more vulnerable this time around, but she's also a more powerful explorer with tweaked controls, more ways to interact with her environments, and even a new rope mechanic that she can use to get around.

Actress Camilla Luddington will reprise her role as Lara Croft through voice acting and motion capture, though it looks like Lara's face has been changed a bit since we last saw her in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Square Enix also announced several versions of the game you can pick up depending on what extras you want.
