Well, this is really happening! An announcement trailer for Japanese studio Kadawoka’s upcoming epic horror showdown The Ring vs. The Grudge has been released.
The idea for the movie sprang to life back in April of last year when a fan-made mashup of the Ju-On and Ringu franchises went completely viral online, and somebody obviously listened, because Kadokawa and NBC Universal Japan have united for that eagerly anticipated showdown.
The Ring vs. The Grudge (or Sadako vs. Kayako, as it's actually called in Japan) will bring together two of the most popular Japanese horror movie franchises of all time by pitting the ghost of Sadako (The Ring/Ringu) against the ghost of Kayako (The Grudge/Ju-On) — much as Freddy vs. Jason saw two iconic American horror movie characters duke it out in all its bloody glory back in 2003: A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) and Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger). Now, that was sweet!
Both featuring cursed Japanese evil spirits, The Ring and The Grudge have spawned several sequels/prequels in both Japan and North America. Check out the announcement trailer below, and prepare to get chills. (Seriously, how awesome is it to see Kayako’s hand crush that VHS tape that was cursed by Sadako? Also, does anybody still own a VHS player anymore?)
Helmed by Koji Shiraishi (Grotesque) and starring Mizuki Yamamoto (Ghost Hunt) as the movie’s heroine Yūri who gets caught in the crossfire between the two cursed spirits, Sadako vs. Kayako will see a 4-D release next June in Japan.
