It's safe to assume that all The X Files fans remember where they were the moment they heard the troubling news that Mulder and Scully had broken up. Creator Chris Carter confirmed the sad split in September 2015, breaking the hearts of fans who were just getting excited for the revived show to return after nine seasons for a six-episode run.
Well, now we can all rejoice – because in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Carter is hinting that there might still be a spark or two between our beloved skeptic and believer -- played by Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, respectively -- in the upcoming season 11.
Dropping hints that the duo will be drawn even closer this season, after sorting out their differences in Season 10, Carter told EW that fans who were hoping for more of a romantic reconciliation “have something to look forward to.”
Not that it’s going to be smooth sailing from the offset, though. The pair certainly look close in a production still for the new season, but, in a role reversal from last season’s cliffhanger, Scully is the one who seems to be in danger, lying in a hospital bed with Mulder praying over her. (You may recall that it was Scully trying to save Mulder at the end of last season, as she was the only one who seemed to be immune to the alien virus sweeping the planet.)
Carter also tells EW that their son William, who Scully gave up for adoption 15 years ago, will play a big part in the new season, making for more tense scenes between the two.
The duo are currently filming 10 brand-new episodes in Vancouver, and judging by what Carter has to say, there’s plenty of surprises ahead. We’ll get to find out more about the true ramifications of Scully’s abduction and the chip in her neck. And Barbara Hershey is also arriving to play what’s been described as a “powerful figure,” but don’t be fooled by the fact she has red hair, as Carter says she’s no relation to Scully and it’s purely coincidental.
