With our unique alliance, we'll be unveiling many limited-edition Ross lithos, rare variant covers, con-only surprises, behind-the-scenes videos, signed posters, interviews, and contest giveaways all year long.
This sweeping new limited-edition fine art print was created by Ross as an exclusive for the Phoenix Comic Fest running from May 24-27. It's a certifiable swarm of caped crime-fighters first composed and rendered by Ross as a wraparound cover for Back Issue #61, which pays tribute to the 1970’s oversized Tabloid and Treasury comics.
Here in his own inimitable style, Ross has conjured up a nostalgic corner of his childhood by paying homage to the original 1976 cover, Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes Limited Collectors’ Edition C-49.
Measuring 19 1/2" x 26 1/2", this dynamic fine art lithograph is priced at $195 and is hand-signed by Alex Ross and includes an official Certificate of Authenticity.
"Superboy and the Legion of Super Heroes" premieres at the Phoenix Comic Fest on Thursday, May 24. A total of 10 pieces of the edition will be available online. Customers are highly encouraged to join the wait list at Alex Ross Art as the edition size is limited to just 100 pieces.
The vibrant explosion of heroes on hand spotlights many Legion favorites, including Superboy, Supergirl, Chameleon Boy, Colossal Boy, Star Boy, Brainiac 5, Sun Boy, Shrinking Violet, Bouncing Boy, Ultra Boy, Mon-El, Matter-Eater Lad, Element Lad, Light Lass, Dream Girl, Ferro Lad, Karate Kid, Princess Projectra, Shadow Lass, Chemical King, Timber Wolf, Wildfire, Tyroc, Dawnstar, Night Girl, Duo Damsel, and Invisible Kid.
"This piece of art is a re-creation of a cover by Mike Grell, the artist who was working on the Legion of Super-Heroes when I was a kid," Ross told SYFY WIRE. "This big bold graphic that was done for an oversized tabloid comic is something I’ve always loved and wanted to revisit. The Legion stands as one of my favorite superhero groups and definitely has some of my favorite costumes of all time, most of which were redesigns of the original Legion. These redesigns were done by Dave Cockrum, who also designed the modern X-Men."
DC Comics' Legion of Super-Heroes is a revolving roster of time-traveling super-beings of the 30th and 31st centuries. They were created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino and first appeared in 1958's Adventure Comics #247. Over the decades the honored ranks have been shuffled around and rebooted to reflect the changing times and climate of the comics industry, but fans have remained faithful to their beloved Legionnaires for 60 years!
