IDW Publishing is celebrating the fall season all month long with its stellar YA crossover title, Star Wars Adventures: Tales From Vader's Castle. Written by Cavan Scott and matched up with vibrant, cartoon-style art by Derek Charm and a rotating roster of guest artists, this space opera series is a 5-issue, weekly anthology focused around the notorious Sith Lord's sinister black stronghold on the volcanic planet of Mustafar.
These five Halloweentime installments told within the framing device of Vader's fearsome fortress will spotlight a treasure of fan-favorite characters spanning the galaxy far, far way, including Star Wars Rebels stars Hera, Kanan, and Chopper; Obi-Wan Kenobi and Count Dooku; Han Solo and Chewbacca; and the furry Ewoks.
The premiere issue arrived on Oct. 3, and the sophomore effort appeared in comic shops on Oct. 10 with Obi-Wan defending himself from a swarm of flying Mynocks with an elegant swipe of his trusty light saber.
Now SYFY WIRE has an exclusive look at Tales From Vader's Castle #3, with the debut of The Briar Witch rising from a thorny patch of brambles. The main creative team of Scott and Charm also chimed in about this latest issue and its guest artist with some illuminating thoughts on where readers can expect this next set of spooky stories to go.
"The decision to include a Han and Chewie story came relatively late in the day, but was an obvious choice as I have spent so much time writing young Solo this year," Scott explained to SYFY WIRE. "I knew I wanted a witch story, but the Nightsisters, while one of my favourite creations in Star Wars, didn’t really work, timeline-wise. So a new witch was required. The fairy tale aspects of this particular story actually came about when I realised that Corin Howell would be providing the art for this particular story. Looking at her previous art, I knew that we had to venture into dark fairy tale territory, and I absolutely love what she brought to the story. There’s even a little tribute to the second Ewok movie of the early 80s, with a witch who transforms into a bird, so perhaps there is a Nightsister connection after all…"
"One of the things I wanted to try with this series was having a different color scheme for each new environment" Charm revealed. "After being on the harsh, high-combat surface of Mustafar, it was fun to change things up and head into Vader's Castle."
