Today promises to be a HUGE day for Marvel Comics, as the publisher looks to its future by embracing its rich past.

The company is promising to reveal major news today regarding its upcoming fall event, Marvel Legacy, that will impact every single hero in the Marvel Universe and shake up the comics industry. Those are big words, and until they announce it, it’s anyone’s guess what the news will be. Safe to say we’ll hear about which creative teams will be steering which books in the post-Secret Empire phase. But is Marvel planning some other seismic moves to shake things up?

Legacy is said to offer fans an entirely new look at the Marvel U by going all the way back to the very beginning. Marvel says the status quo is going to change in a big way. Also, long-running titles will revert to original series numberings, which will no doubt please some of Marvel’s longtime readers and collectors.

The variant cover by Mark Brooks for Marvel Legacy #1, a single issue by writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic, may – repeat, MAY – offer some tantalizing clues. For one, we see the old-school versions of Captain America, Iron Man and Thor, alongside their new counterparts Sam Wilson, Jane Foster and Riri Williams.  And what was up with the Thing image that Marvel’s EIC Axel Alonso teased on Twitter earlier this week??

Syfy Wire is happy to debut these exclusive gifs announcing the Marvel Legacy series. They feature variant covers that pay homage to classic images from Marvel’s glorious four-color history.  The new titles are:

US Avengers (cover artist: Christian Ward), Hawkeye (cover artist: Greg Smallwood), Jessica Jones (cover artist: Daniel Mora), Champions (cover artist: Daniel Mora), Spider-Man vs. Deadpool (cover artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli) and Guardians (cover artist: Ron Lim).  They’re cool and retro and wil be a nice distraction until Marvel drops its big news. We’re particularly fond of the Guardians/Infinity Gauntlet homage, because who doesn’t love seeing Ron Lim getting his cosmic on?

Based on these images -- and we still don't even have any real answers yet -- we're already updating our rallying cry to Make Mine Marvel 2017, but we want to know what you think. What's your favorite cover? And what do you think is going to happen in Marvel Legacy?
