More than a few comics, TV shows, and movies have reacted to the current political climate, but none have adapted their dystopias so acrobatically as Matteo Pizzolo and Amancay Nahuelpan’s Calexit.
The secession comic focusing on a California breaking away from the U.S. after a fascist president takes over wasn’t created because of the current administration, but, according to a release, “California's defiance of Trump's policies and the Trump Administration's new policy war against California has us scrambling to keep our speculative adventure a step ahead of the real world.” Where they go: war.
Now, as the debut arc comes to a close, we have the exclusive first look at the comic’s cover and six preview pages (which you can see in the gallery below) from the end of the Black Mask Studios book’s first story. The various militias, rebellions, and coalitions are all bashing their heads together in the Sanctuary State, and it’s all led up to this.
Jamil, the smuggler, has just been stopped by enemy forces as he escorts a rebel leader out of L.A. He’s full of sweet talk but his clothes betray him. Meanwhile, more schemes brew that look to amplify the ambition slicing through the multi-factional chaos. Plenty of real-world scheming finds its way into the alt-future comic — making its politics just one of the too-close-to-home aspects found in its terrifying America.
The arc-concluding issue drops on May 9.
