While all eyes are usually on Wars in the Stars and superheroes flying around through space, it's good to remember that some of the best science fiction also comes out of the indie circuit.

And fresh off a year of film festivals and a win at the Barbados Film Festival for Best Sci-Fi Feature, Diverge might be the next indie darling you need to check out, and SYFY WIRE has a exclusive peek at its trailer.

Set amid the fallout of a global pandemic that has laid waste to humanity's cities, the film follows a man as he tries to search for a cure to save his wife, who's been struck with a lethal virus. After he finds himself held captive by a stranger he encounters, he is faced with a decision that could have a far-reaching impact.

Diverge is the first feature-length film from Young Gunner Films, and it's ambitious. It was shot over the course of a year in order to capture different seasons accurately, as well as (minor spoiler) being able to effectively portray lead actor Ivan Sandomire in two distinctly different timelines.

Writer-director James Morrison set out to create something abstract and sprawling that would challenge sci-fi fans' imaginations — all without any studio backing.

The film will be released through iTunes on Feb. 6, but you can pre-order it now if you want to throw a little extra support behind an independent science fiction feature that is completely its own and not a rehash, remake, re-imagining, or continuation of something that already exists.
