The deep well of material squirming and writhing within the cosmic horror writings of Providence's favorite son, H.P. Lovecraft, has nourished many a comic book, feature film, TV series, and video game.
Frogwares is a thriving gaming studio based in Kiev, Ukraine, and the Eastern European designers and artists are dipping into Lovecraft's arcane kingdoms of darkness and dread in their upcoming open-world survival horror release, The Sinking City.
It's a murky, mysterious investigation adventure where the terrifying Cthulhu Mythos intertwines with the debauchery and lawlessness of American's Roaring '20s period.
Founded in 2000, the independent developers are best known for their Sherlock Holmes-themed games, The Awakened, The Mystery of the Mummy, Crimes and Punishments, and The Devil's Daughter, with diverse titles across their entire portfolio selling over 7 million units worldwide.
The Sinking City has been one of their most complex horror projects in years and is set to stun the planet when it's launched for XBox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, possibly sometime late this year or early next.
"I guess the only thing we can say is that we are going full steam ahead with the project, and we cannot wait to show more to people as we go along," Frogwares' Michal Napora told SYFY WIRE. "It's our most ambitious project to date, and we are excited (and a little bit nervous as well, in a good way) to see people's reactions when it finally comes out. We hope that people will enjoy what we are working on. If they like it, it will be mission accomplished. It's what matters to us the most."
Here's the official synopsis:
“We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of the infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.”
— H.P. Lovecraft, “The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories”
The Sinking City is a game of investigation and mystery taking place in a fictional open world inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. The player steps into the shoes of a 1920s private investigator who finds himself in the city of Oakmont Massachusetts, New England. A city suffering from unprecedented floods of clearly supernatural origins. A city trembling on the brink of madness.
Can you survive this beleaguered town and untangle the mysteries responsible for its tragic situation or will you be driven beyond madness yourself?
