Legion isn't just the weirdest show to join the wide-ranging stable of superhuman TV, it's made great strides in weird TV in general. Let's not focus on its body-swapping, mental illness, confusing plot, or trippy visuals. Let's focus on the music. Creator Noah Hawley literally named one of his characters Syd Barrett and cited Dark Side of the Moon as one of the creative influences for the show.
So it makes sense that the show is full of cover versions of rock songs Hawley wanted to showcase for thematic reasons. The show is releasing an album of these covers titled It's Always Blue: Songs From Legion, and we've got a sneak peek at one of the tracks -- one sung by Barrett actress Rachel Keller.
Along with recently prolific series composer Jeff Russo (who also gained fame as the backing vocals and lead guitar of Tonic -- you know, the "If You Could Only See" band), Keller spins an ethereal take on the Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere," from the 1985 album Little Creatures. Fans first heard the cover in the show's second episode ever, when Sydney and protagonist David are traveling together.
Check it out:
The doom-heavy lyrics reflect the somewhat laissez-faire attitude the mutant show has toward the future, sanity, and, well, normalcy — even more so thanks to Keller's floaty vocals and the cloudy synth underneath. Spooky, lovelorn, and only slightly reminiscent of every single slowed-down cover over every superhero trailer ever.
Other tracks on the album include "Burning Down the House" and "Behind Blue Eyes," both sung by Hawley. Now, that's dedication to auteurism.
It's Always Blue: Songs From Legion comes out on Aug. 17.
