After a long break and the development of a Netflix series, Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá have a new Umbrella Academy comic book mini-series on the way. Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion is fast arriving, with the first issue dropping October 3. Solicitations for November's releases will be announced soon, but SYFY WIRE has the exclusive reveal for the variant cover for Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion #2, as well as the sketch that will be included as a nice extra with the ultra-cool, super huge high-end Spaceboy Maquette that is being solicited for pre-orders.
In Hotel Oblivion, a few years have gone by after the first story, "The Apocalypse Suite," and happening directly after the second story, Dallas, the members of the Academy are even more detached from one another. As the variant cover reveals, Issue #2 will introduce a new character, Quinn, who is the president of the Mothers of Agony biker gang living outside of the City. There are also promises of ballroom dancing, cowboys, and a magic eight ball! This second issue of Hotel Oblivion hits comic stands on November 7 and is written by Way, with art by Bá, colors by Nick Filardi, and letters by Nate Piekos.
For those uninitiated, the Umbrella Academy is a comic about a dysfunctional family of superheroes that resulted from a phenomenon in the mid-20th century that miraculously left 43 superpowered infants born to random women who showed no signs or planned to be pregnant. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, aka The Monocle, adopts seven of the children and trains them to protect the world from other superpowered threats. Eventually the Academy splits but reunites when one of its own becomes a villain and their foster parent Hargreeves passes away.
Hotel Oblivion starts off with the time-traveling Number Five as an assassin; Rumor remains in the remains of what was once a happy marriage while Vanya, the White Violin, recovers from her gunshot wound to the head.
Meanwhile, Spaceboy is in Tokyo, far away from the rest of the team, and while we're on the subject of our favorite man-ape, we must talk about Dark Horse Direct's latest creation, available for preorder now, and that's the Spaceboy Maquette.
Above is our exclusive reveal of the sketch, a copy of which will be included with the deluxe figure as a cool exclusive bonus, and below is a picture of the actual full-sized maquette with a person standing behind it to see its massive scale. Standing 14" tall, it's sure to dwarf just about every other statue in your collection and will cost you $299.99 to bring it home.
Even Bá was awed at its craftmanship and beauty, although he might be a little biased, since it's based on his design. It's hard to disagree with him, though, and while on the set of the Netflix series, he was floored by seeing it come to life. Sounds like those are some production props that will be hard to wrestle away from Bá if he has a say, but now all of us can own the next-best thing.
The Netflix UA series will star Ellen Page, Aidan Gallagher, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Colm Feore, and Mary J. Blige. See below for more photos of the Spaceboy maquette and the regular cover for Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion #2.
