Did you know that Jughead Jones is the latest in a long line of werewolves? His story will continue next week as Archie Comics’ horror title, Jughead: The Hunger, brings the action back to Riverdale. But it’s not going to be a happy tale for anyone!
Months ago, Jughead discovered that he was “the Riverside Ripper,” a serial killer who preyed upon the innocent during his transformations into a werewolf. It turns out that Jughead’s friend, Betty Cooper, was secretly spying on him for her family of werewolf hunters. Archie Andrews convinced Betty to let them try to cure Jughead from his curse...but the cure didn’t take. Jughead subsequently murdered Reggie Mantle and fled town, with Betty and Archie in pursuit.
Unfortunately, Reggie just couldn’t stay dead. He’s become a werewolf as well, and he’s out for revenge. In our exclusive preview for Jughead: The Hunger #6, we catch up with Jughead’s sister, Jellybean, as she is tormented by Reggie and his wolves.
Unlike Jughead, Reggie has created a new pack of werewolves by transforming Veronica Lodge, Cheryl Blossom, Moose Mason, and even Mr. Weatherbee into fiendishly evil monsters. It remains to be seen if Jellybean has also inherited the Jones family curse, but she may pay the price for what her brother has unleashed.
Archie and Betty did manage to track down Jughead and his cousin, Bingo Wilkin, who is also a werewolf. During that battle, Archie shot Jughead with silver bullets, which seemingly inflicted mortal wounds upon him. Unable to deal with his guilt over "killing" his friend, Archie finally decided to return home to Riverdale.
Of course, Archie can’t actually explain where he’s been to his parents. As far as they knew, he was another one of the Riverdale Ripper’s victims.
But there’s at least one more surprise waiting in Archie’s room.
It’s not going to be all hugs and video games for Archie and Jughead. Everyone in town knows Jughead was the Riverside Ripper, even if they don’t know that he’s also a werewolf. With Archie back home, it’s only a matter of time before Betty and her family show up on his doorstep.
Jughead: The Hunger # 6 was written by Frank Tieri, with art by Pat and Tim Kennedy, Joe Eisma, and Bob Smith; and colors by Matt Herms. Adam Gorham, Derek Charm, and Michael Walsh drew the covers. The issue will be released in comic book stores on Wednesday, May 30.
