John Byrne is one of the undisputed masters of the comic book medium, with epic runs on Fantastic Four, The Man of Steel, and The Uncanny X-Men. The sometimes-controversial writer/artist is one of the most acclaimed creators of his generation, and his work has graced the pages of nearly every flagship Marvel and DC title.
Some of Byrne's more experimental work ventures into some splashy space opera territory, especially in IDW's striking Stowaway to the Stars.
This inventive hybrid endeavor, first published back in 2016, began life as an adult coloring book/prose story capitalizing on the burgeoning craze for detailed illustrations to be infused with colors of one's personal choice for those who grew up with their beloved box of Crayola crayons (with or without the built-in sharpener).
Now the trippy adult coloring book containing lavish splash pages has been transformed into a full-color 48-page Special Edition comic from IDW, written and drawn by Byrne and brilliantly colored by Leonard O'Grady.
The breezy, evocative story follows the exploits of Dreamer, a starry-eyed teenage citizen of Capella-4G, one of Earth's oldest colonies and a vivid, bustling spaceport filled with out-worlders, robots, spaceships, and aliens. Byrne jets you into a strange but familiar space fantasy dotted with exotic moons, distant galaxies, and the alluring twinkle of far-off stars.
John Byrne’s Stowaway to the Stars #1 Special Edition lands in comic shops on June 6.
