Extra geek points will be awarded to those familiar with the legend of Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, the famous Greek myth surrounding the entrancing daughter of Zeus and Demeter. For those of us a bit hazy on the nuances and details of the classic tale, a provocative new Persephone graphic novel is arriving next month from Boom!.
Expanding on their Archaia imprint's evocative titles, Boom! Studios delivers a haunting tale of Hades that will realign your perceptions of the gods and goddesses that populate the loftier literary planes of existence.
Written and drawn by French illustrator extraordinaire Loïc Locatelli-Kournwsky (Pocahontas: Princess of the New World, Canis Majoris), Persephone is a clever modernization of the immortal Greek myth and carries with it a distinctive European flair amid its profoundly intelligent story and alluring art.
Locatelli-Kournwsky drew inspiration from the magical works of the legendary Hayao Miyazaki in crafting his ageless saga.
“I am absolutely crazy about Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday,” said Locatelli-Kournwsky in a press release. “The main characters from these movies were my main inspirations forPersephone. And Demeter is supposed to look like Kate Winslet from her filmThe Dressmaker, mixed with the Witch of the Waste from Howl's Moving Castle.”
Here's the official solicitation synopsis:
Arriving in stores this May, PERSEPHONE follows a young girl whose search for the truth about her identity leads her on a journey deep into the Underworld by visionary writer/artist Loïc Locatelli-Kournwsky. She may be the adopted daughter of the famous magician Demeter, but Persephone struggles to find her place alongside the force of nature that is her mother. Driven by recurring nightmares, she decides to explore the secrets of her birth, which everyone around her seems rather intent on keeping from her. With or without their help, Persephone will embark on an epic adventure deep into the Underworld where she’ll discover who—or what—she is.
“Persephone is a story for anyone who’s ever felt like they don’t fit or like the world is telling them who they’re supposed to be, even if it’s not who they want to be,” added Sierra Hahn, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Storyteller Loïc Locatelli-Kournwsky beautifully reimagines the Greek myth of Demeter and her daughter, the eponymous Persephone, as a nuanced modern day fantasy adventure for readers of all ages.”
