Valiant Entertainment has steadily rebuilt its line of well-crafted comics, rebooting and re-tooling the smaller to medium titles on up. Since 2012, books like Harbinger, Rai, Bloodshot, Quantum and Woody, Ninjak and Archer & Armstrong became the new foundation, while new books like Faith kept it fresh for newcomers. Their strength is in their lineup of creators like Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, Clayton Crain, Trevor Hairsine, Joshua Dysart and Jody Houser and character-driven stories. But there was one major title missing from their lineup, until now. The fan-favorite X-O Manowar, written by Kindt with art by Tomas Giorello, debuted this past March, selling 90,000 copies, becoming the biggest release of 2017 by an independent publisher, outselling The Walking Dead.
Its first story arc, "Soldier," re-establishes man out of time Aric of Dacia at peace on an alien world called Gorin. He left the Earth for unknown reasons, but his peace is broken when Aric is pulled into an alien civil war and thrown into the frontline trenches, needing the help of the X-O Manowar armor he hoped he would never need again. During the first year of the relaunch, readers will follow Aric's rise from soldier to general to emperor and then to visigoth, leading to the conquest of an entire planet.
Syfy Wire has an exclusive preview for the first five interior pages of X-O Manowar #4, the start of the second arc, "General," which will hit stands on June 28 and serve as a jumping-on point as he transitions from his soldier role into the general, still battling the Cadmium Empire. It will feature the art of Doug Braithwaite (Ninjak) and colorist Diego Rodriguez.
Also being revealed are the 50/50 covers done by Lewis Larosa and Dave Johnson and a variant cover by Bob Layton. Subsequent arcs will feature artwork by Clayton Crain (beginning in issue #7), Mico Suayan (issue #10), and Ryan Bodenheim (issue #11).
Check out the preview and let us know what you think and if you are reading the relaunch of X-O Manowar.
