With all due respect to industry luminaries like Neal Adams, Jim Lee, and Frank Miller, nobody does Batman better than Alex Ross! Since his Eisner Award-winning Kingdom Come in 1996, Ross has been rendering the Caped Crusader with his inimitable style and realistic intensity that fans have formed an intimate bond with over the past two decades.
This week, Alex Ross Art is celebrating Ross’ storied history of illustrating the Dark Knight with a special Batman Week affair that runs at Alex Ross Art from Dec. 3 through Dec. 9, and SYFY WIRE has an exclusive look at a bounty of Bat-centric artworks and signed covers to tempt you during this joyous season.
First up is a compelling portrait of the nocturnal avenger titled, The Batman. This stunning piece was originally featured in the Batman: No Man’s Land #1 lenticular cover to celebrate Batman's 60th anniversary, and later appeared as an exclusive lithograph run from Sideshow Collectibles. The Batman will be available next week as part of a new deluxe artist's proof Batman/Superman lithograph set for the first time, signed by Ross, individually numbered, and limited to just 25 editions.
Bats will come combined with a fine art litho originally created as the cover to Superman Forever #1, revealing the beefy Man of Steel in all his primary-colored glory. This matching set is reproduced on fine art paper, measures 18" x 19" per image, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity for $350. Fans and collectors are encouraged to join the wait list HERE.
Ross talks about his creative process for Batman’s costume in this exclusive video:
"For Batman, I made a mask based upon a head cast — I wanted it to look like it was just makeup on a face, so that it wasn't this three-dimensional thing, but that it was very close to the skin," Ross tells SYFY WIRE.
Next is a beautiful limited-edition Origins: Batman litho featuring a riveting illustration by Alex Ross from the graphic novel, Batman: War on Crime. Each dramatic piece measures 14 1/2" x 15 1/2", is limited to 500 individually numbered editions, comes hand-signed, professionally matted, and includes a Certificate of Authenticity for $150.
Nine provocative panels whisk us on a visual journey of discovery as Ross treats us to as series of pivotal events in Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman. Depicted in the imagery are slices of emotional moments when young Master Wayne witnesses the death of his parents and his heart-wrenching vow to avenge them.
Here, Batman's origin story unfolds in subtle shades of midnight blue as the Dark Knight looms high atop Gotham City and culminates with a young Bruce in full color captured in the haunting reflection of The Bat.
Only a few unframed lithos are left for purchase, so run don't walk if you'd like one. Bat-lovers are urged to join the wait list at Alex Ross Art, as they'll be flying out the door in a great flapping of wings and a bluish-black blur.
Also available will be a festive assortment of iconic Batman covers hand-signed by Ross from titles like Grant Morrison's Batman RIP series, Dynamite's retro delight, Batman ‘66 Meets the Green Hornet #1-#6, Batman Last Rites, Batman #47 variants, and many more.
